A Day in the Life of a Resident at Second Spring

by "KG"

I usually wake up around 6 or 7 a.m. and take my meds, which are self-administered, I’m proud to say. My next action is to check in with the nurse who administers the meds I cannot administer to myself, because they’re controlled substances.

Breakfast at Second Spring is served hot and by order three times a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The other days of the week I help myself to a variety of cereals, bagels/toast/English muffins and hot coffee or tea. There are also a variety of juices to choose from, and different flavors of yogurt.

After breakfast, I may go work out at a nearby gym or do dishes and/or snack preparation in the kitchen.

Several days a week I attend different therapy appointments and groups that are helpful to me in my recovery, including Alcoholics Anonymous and a Bible study group. After these meetings, I usually have a two-hour pass, which gives me time to do errands, work on my computer in a local café or library, shop, and visit with friends. Some afternoons I attend other group meetings, for example the drug and alcohol group at Central Vermont Substance Abuse Services.

During the hours of the day that I am not attending groups in the community, I may attend one or more of the groups at Second Spring. These groups cover a variety of topics, including Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Life/Social Skills, Psychopharmacology, and Anger Management. There are also resident meetings twice a day, where the residents are all asked how they’re doing, and where we make requests for outings to places we need to go.

I usually spend my down time in my room working on things that are of interest to me, like practicing my music, doing Bible study work, or working on NA material. Sometimes I socialize with other residents out in the smoke shack and sometimes I watch movies. I usually try to be here for meals, since they are included in my rent here.

In the evenings, I may go out to an NA meeting or attend a music venue in a nearby town. If we’re not on a planned late outing, I usually retire at about 10 PM.

I go to church on Sundays, weather and transportation availability permitting, and sometimes I go on passes home to visit my family. My family is also welcome to visit me here at Second Spring, too.

Well, that about covers it-my typical day/week at Second Spring!
